Because we're posting random art things~ I too must admit to having aspiring webcomic dreams. Due to school and such, it doesn't have anything remotely like an update schedule and exists pretty much just to make me work on telling a story visually rather than with a written narrative. The primary characters are equine (NOT a fan comic) and the setting is definitely fantasy: two demigods are at war, pitting their herds of followers against one another in a bid for control of the world's heartlands. The main characters are from the winning side, but the conflict has gotten a bit bloody and both are beginning to question their purpose, albeit in very different ways. There's quite a pantheon- the gods are embodiments of aspects of nature, rather than elements, and their level of interaction with the world is very inconsistent. I know pretty much nothing about comic-type art or this kind of storytelling, so the whole endeavor is a bit rough around the edges and I change background styles, fonts, size of page, etc rather often. Page 1 was posted in January of 2010, so... yeah. I'm a bit slow with it. Here's its cover page and page 1. I posted page 30 a few days ago and have up through page 40 sketched and waiting to be finished. You are welcome to critique any part of it!

Oh wow, for a two year old page, it looks great. The backgrounds are fantastic. But one thing about comics that, admittedly I have issues with sticking to, is to give up some details for the sake of speed. This is why a lot of comics are black and white, or have a simplistic form of shading. One way a lot of people make up for this is with gradients and textures, which add color depth in a quick and easy way.

I know- I've seen some really cool uses of gradient coloring and textures in webcomics. I just got my copy of photoshop working within the past few months (also the time when I started working full-time, so I haven't used it much) and have not yet mastered meshing photoshop gradients and textures with my preexisting work in Illustrator. I'm on Illustrator 10.0, which is a few versions too old to have transparent gradient powers! I really need to take a class in digital art and learn all those very cool tricks people use for manipulating color and texture on the screen.

Ahh, I have very little experience with Illustrator, and in Photoshop I'm mostly self-taught. Just used Deviant Art tutorials, mostly. Tons of good tutorials over there. Only thing I can recommend is, if you don't already know them, look up Photoshop clipping layers. They're endlessly useful for shading things without worrying about going passed the line art.

I messed with clipping masks a bit on the last two pages to keep background shading stuff from running between panels. Handy- will mess with it more in the future!

Most of them are my own photography- the last few are of questionable quality, I think (still learning the whole color and paint thing in photoshop) but thanks! I'm glad you like them!

Thanks! It's been fun to work on. I've got through page 40 sketched and a pretty loose script for what happens after. A lot of the next ten pages are one action sequence, and after that a lot of things change. I think I can finish the sequence at my current level, but for what happens after I'm gonna need to level up my Photoshop skills I'd like to capture what I can see in my head for the visual narrative!
