The conversation over in syn's strategy thread has gotten me curious.
If you've picked your element already, what were your reasons? Was it a difficult choice? If you're still debating, which elements are you considering and why?
I'm going with Wind; I almost always wind up going wind/air. XD I didn't originally assume I was going to - in fact, I was thinking of picking Lightning because of a character I have. Then I discovered they have brief element-personality descriptions on the map and Lightning is a little too... pragmatic for my taste.
On the other hand, the moment I read the description for Wind, I thought wow Wind is perfect; of course it's perfect, it's wind. I went and read all of the others anyway out of stubbornness ("you always pick air/wind, shouldn't you try something else?") and I was briefly tempted by Shadow.
Shadow is appealing because of the games/trickster nature of it; it matches my secondary Slytherin characteristics. (I'm a Ravenclaw, if you're curious.) But... despite my competitive streak, I'm more fond of puzzles than games and I despise cheating.
Wind, on the other hand, fits me perfectly. The whole flitting around, avoiding responsibility, constantly hopping from one new exciting thing to another, a love of exploring, etc. I suppose it is fated for me to forever be an air element. XD

I was debating between Earth, Ice, Shadow and Lightning.
Earth is my zodiac element. While I don't believe in the zodiac-predictions and love matching crap, I do have a genuine interest in the zodiac elements, animals and mythos. As such, I've always liked earth. I also enjoyed the look of their land, and the giant Pillar of elements. But they were very much focused on the past and tradition, which fits them, but not so much me.
Ice is my second go-to element. Again, they have a great aesthetic. And I enjoyed the apathy aspect, and the constant preservation for sake of analysis. My choice to not pick Ice wasn't because anything didn't fit, as much as I just ended up preferring Lightning.
Shadow was for similar reasons to you (except Slytherin is my first house, Ravenclaw being secondary XD). I like bets and gambles, and my inclination to rogues means that I'm happy to play dirty (in fiction). So again, there wasn't so much unfitting as it didn't beat out Lightning.
And then there was, well, Lightning! I'm a geek. I'm no computer expert, but I'm certainly an addict, and enjoy video games just as much. I'm always around a screen, working on something. I'm a dreamer, trying to create new worlds in my head, and could use my Lightning dragons to make up crazy contraptions within FR.
Additionally, it fit in with my thinking. I believe that humans have reached a point where our evolution is going to start being influenced by technological innovations more than genes and biology. In fact, I think we're already beginning this process.
Through this, I can create this big story about how my clan wants to use technology to improve the physical form of dragons. It is PERFECT for me. My clan are a bunch of transdraconist glowwyrms. Lol.

Paradoxical Blue, "transdraconist glowwyrms" is one of my new favorite phrases. XD You could make an interesting argument that our development as a species has been influenced more by technology than biology since the point where technological development began to outpace biological evolution - and I'd argue that point as being the dawn of agriculture. Aaand I'm derailing my own thread. *facepalm*

Thank you! I try my best. XD And yeah, I probably didn't phrase it the best of ways. But just saying "cyborgs and robots are the future!" makes people look at you like a loon. >w>; And lol, it's okay. We shall just wait for someone else to delve into their elemental explanations.

Wind was love at first sight for me.
I am also adventurous, free and a giant procrastinator, just like the said element. Not to mention the oriental theme/land that revolves around Wind <3

I decided to go with Nature, just because I love nature, most of the pics I take are nature pics.

Same as Harpy. I just love nature, and I think I would be happiest, deep in a forest, without any traces of the existence of mankind .. Except maybe for myself.. But I would be more than happy as a little bird or gecko I did doubt for a moment, because I am myself more Arcane-like. But my love for nature was stronger than my curiousity Plus I already had a brilliant theme worked out for the nature flight, and it would be so much trouble to do the same for arcane. I made a list of names and theme subjects nonetheless, just in case I change my mind signing up

Ooh, an Arcane flight with an alchemy theme would be awesome. It's almost enough to tempt me to choose Arcane.
Almost.
Too bad we can't have multiple accounts. xD Ah well~

I almost chose plague because their HUGE reference to zergs from starcraft. And I love Zerg. They are adaptive,They are many, and as they tear down through their enemies they consume them, they grow stronger. Zerg don't forgive weakness, but they do know perfection is unreachable. Each adaptation comes with an achilles' point. I would've chosen Plague myself, even now I feel a little bit tempted...but I love wind too much I don't find Plague evil at all, it behaves just like any normal biological being: Adapt, Consume, Grow, Evolve. They just seem grim thanks to their dark outside, but to me they're as alive as the Gladekeeper himself. I find Plague to be the exact opposite of Arcane when regarding ideology. Plague clings to its bestial, original nature while Arcane seeks to stray away further and further from the material world. WOW IM WRITING TOO MUCH AND STRAYING FROM THE TOPIC

Yeah, I have to agree with Xin. Plague never struck me as evil. They may LOOK evil, but they just act as the harsher form of evolution, kill or be killed. There's more survival instinct than malice behind it.

Yeah, however, eliskan is right about their aggressiveness. They're of the ruthless, unforgiving kind. They're more like beasts in a sense, led only by a certain overmind (plaaaague god and now another ref to starcraft OOPS. )
And animals don't carry the notion of malevolence. You have to be intelligent and aware of morality to be downright evil. Evil is done within self-awareness.

But plague IS life. Even in its pustulous, virulent way, it's still a living being.
Plague/Nature is, in the bigger picture, a confrontation between two beings for survival of the fittest.
"whereas the Plaguebringer seems to believe that life should constantly die so new life can take its place." Sorry, I have to contradict you there. The Plaguebringer tests life through a series of biological modifications that are in most cases lethal, but the ones that survive evolve to a form closer to perfection.
Plague is in a way just evolution on hyperspeed.
HOWEVER it DOES destroy biomes and such, some dragons/people care about their culture and tradition, and this fast change is very uncomfortable for them. Hence Plaguebringer is hated.
Plaguebringer does care about life, heck, she PROMOTES it, as long as it is not weak. What she doesn't care about is the past. For her everything changes, nothing stays the same.

Xin Xiao - I think discussing your views on an Element and why you almost chose it is exactly on topic. I find the Plague/Nature dichotomy to be really interesting. One is all about the preservation and nurturing of life in a harmonious unified way, and the other is all about demonstrating your greater fitness to live than the rest of the world by directly challenging the right of all things to life. And yet, both respect life - just in entirely different ways. It's sort of like democracy (Nature) versus anarchy (Plague), where "a voice in the government" is analogous to "surviving". In a proper democracy the system protects your voice while in an anarchy, you gain a voice by being the "loudest" and drowning out or erasing competing voices. ...okay, now this is getting off topic. *cough*

I had a hard time deciding between Ice, Water and Arcane. They all pull in different aspects of personality. I finally decided on Ice because it seems like it may be a bit under represented and I like the colors associated with it the best.

slvrstarr (jarlis) - Ice is very pretty. I briefly considered it for those last two reasons myself, but the element itself doesn't appeal to me nearly as much as Wind or Shadow. Speaking of colors, I have to admit that the eye color for Shadow is part of why I didn't wind up going with it. It's a lovely color but I personally think the dragons look better with lighter eyes.
